Kevin Bacon returns to Footloose roots for a special cause

Kevin Bacon has taken a step back in time to return to the Utah high school where the 1984 movie Footloose was filmed.

Students at Payson High School launched the #BacontoPayson social media campaign several months ago in an attempt to get the Hollywood legend to attend the school's final prom.

The high schoolers recreated movie scenes and choreographed videos in the hopes of capturing Bacon's attention, willing him to return to the school before the campus relocates at the end of the school year.

The online campaign worked, as the 65-year-old actor returned to Payson on Saturday where he addressed the students and praised their valiant efforts to get him back to the iconic school, but not before striding onto the stage while the iconic song Footloose blared through the grounds.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by SixDegrees.org (@sixdegreesofkb)

"When I first heard about this Bacon to Payson thing, I was like, 'Wow, this is crazy.' First pics of Molly the Magpie reunion

After a heartwarming 45-day saga that captured the nation's attention, Molly the Magpie has finally returned to her Gold Coast home, reuniting with her unlikely best friend, Peggy and Ruby the Staffies.

The news, announced by Queensland’s Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (DESI), brought immense relief and joy to Molly's devoted followers and animal lovers across the country.

DESI's decision to approve a specialised license for Molly's return was a pivotal moment in this remarkable journey. Independent veterinary experts deemed Molly "highly habituated", highlighting the importance of her continued care and wellbeing. The dedication of Molly's human family, Juliette Wells and Reece Mortensen, in meeting the conditions outlined in the license – including refraining from commercial exploitation of the bird or its image, undergoing wildlife carer training, and engaging with DESI to ensure Molly’s ongoing care and enrichment – demonstrated their unwavering commitment to her welfare.

Throughout Molly's absence, the nation remained captivated by her story, eagerly following updates on social media. With over 800,000 followers on Instagram, Molly and her human family became symbols of compassion and friendship, inspiring countless individuals along the way.

"WE HAVE THE BEST NEWS 💥 MOLLY IS HOME !!!!" wrote Juliette and Reece on Instagram. "We are overwhelmed with emotion right now 😭👏. I have been visualising & looking forward to this day for what feels like a lifetime 😊. It was a very exciting reunion at the Dept this morning for us with a little cry of happiness from Molly.

"When we arrived home the Peggy & Ruby wiggly bottoms were in full force and a few excited noises from Molly.

"We are so grateful to you our supporters, QLD Premier Steven Miles & the DESI for allowing us to get our licence & to be reunited with Molly again ❤️. We look forward to life settling back down to normal very soon."

The outpouring of support and celebration upon Molly's return was overwhelming. Messages of joy flooded social media, echoing the sentiments of a nation rejoicing in Molly's homecoming. From tears of happiness on train commutes to heartfelt expressions of relief, Molly's story touched the hearts of many.

"Oh THANK GOODNESS - SANITY has PREVAILED," wrote one folllower. "Poor little Molly must feel so relieved. I do still think it’s ridiculous you can’t do a book or a movie- I would love that and would be happy for you to make millions because you have brought so much JOY to so many. I mean it’s not like someone can grab a magpie and put it with their dogs and this happens. I’m not sure what that legality is protecting🙄🙄🙄."

"I understand why there are rules about wildlife," posted another. "I understand why this unusual circumstance brought concern. Humans have been abusing wild animals for personal gain forever. But I do think all of the goals surrounding Molly's concerns could have been achieved without removing him from his home and upsetting everyone, most especially Molly. I hope he settles in without being disoriented. He's seen a bit more of the world now. He may want to see more of it. But I hope he always comes home. Love to all of you."

As Molly settles back into her familiar surroundings, surrounded by the love of her family and furry friends, there is a collective sigh of relief. The journey may have been challenging, but the outcome is one of triumph and unity.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Peggyandmolly (@peggyandmolly)

Images: Instagram

Kate Ritchie reflects on special moment with John Farnham

Kate Ritchie has recalled the moment she met John Farnham on the set of Home & Away, in a moment that made her feel like "the luckiest little girl in Australia”.

The former Aussie soap star shared the touching tribute as part of 7NEWS Spotlight’s The Lost Tapes of John Farnham, as she revealed how much the iconic singer means to her.

Ritchie first met Farnham in 1998, as the pair filmed a special episode of Home & Away in which Ritchie, who played nine-year-old Sally Fletcher, was lucky enough to meet her idol, during what was to become an iconic Australian TV moment.

“I think we forget how big John Farnham was,” Ritchie told Spotlight’s Michael Usher. “Not only was he an incredible talent and so likeable, I feel as though he represented what Australia was all about."

“Not only was he our soundtrack, but he was the guy you wanted to be friends with.”

Since filming the episode with Farnham 25 years ago, Ritchie says he’s touched her life in a very special way.

“I remember I was the luckiest little girl in Australia,” she said. “The story was that Sally Fletcher won tickets to see Johnny perform but at the last minute she got an awful case of the chicken pox and because he is such a great guy ... he decided to come back to Summer Bay and visit Sally Fletcher in her pyjamas.”

After the two filmed the special episode together, Ritchie said she has never forgotten that moment.

“He made the child that I was feel like I was the important person on set that day,” she said. “It was like he had come to see me and he needed my help.”

Even now, 25 years later, Ritchie is still one of the country’s biggest Farnham fans.

“It’s really nice to talk about it,” she said. “I’ve bored my family over the years and (his 1990 hit) Burn For You is a bit of a favourite.

“I think that if you’re celebrating the nation we live in ... and you’re not playing John Farnham, you’re not doing it correctly.”

Rod Stewart's rare, rockin' family reunion

When it comes to reunions with none other than legendary rock icon Rod Stewart, this ain't your regular family get-together. Rather, it's a rare cosmic alignment of almost all his children in the same place at the same time.

Sir Rod, at a spry 78, boasts quite the tribe, with eight kids from three different marriages and a few past flings thrown into the mix. We're talking a generational span that could give the history books a run for their money. His eldest offspring is a seasoned 59, while the youngest is just a fresh-faced 12-year-old.

Usually, you might catch Rod gallivanting about town with a couple of his kiddos, but this time, it's a whole extravaganza! He's managed to gather almost the whole brood for a picture. And we bet he had to pull some serious strings and break out all his dad jokes just to make it happen.

Penny Lancaster, Sir Rod's wife, was the genius behind capturing this monumental moment on their family holiday in Spain. Picture this: Rod flashing his rockstar grin, surrounded by seven of his beloved offspring and their significant others. It's a regular rock 'n' roll galaxy right there!

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Penny Lancaster (@penny.lancaster)

Now let's talk about the missing star – Sir Rod's eldest daughter, Sarah Streeter. She was the first to grace Rod's life when he was just a young buck of 17. A family affair, but with a twist – Sarah was adopted and didn't find out about her superstar dad until she was all grown up. But fret not; they reunited, and now she's officially part of the extended rockstar clan.

Next up, the glam diva Kimberly Stewart, the love child from Rod's first marriage. She's followed in her mum's footsteps and delved into the world of modelling and acting – and she even had her own reality show.

Then there's Sean Stewart, Rod's offspring from the same union. He's taken a shot at acting and reality TV too, but it seems he had a bit of a "cashing out" situation with his inheritance. Third time's the charm, they say, but maybe it's time to let go of that clothing brand, Sean!

Now, let's meet the musical maestro, Ruby Stewart. Rod's got some good genes, and she's rocking out just like her old man. She and her musical duo, The Sisterhood Band, released an album that gave us a sweet taste of the summer vibes. And in a true "like father, like daughter" moment, they even covered one of Rod's hits together.

But wait, there's more! Introducing Renee Stewart, Rod's child from his second marriage to Rachel Hunter. She's ditched the rockstar life for a zen path as a yoga teacher. Namaste to that!

Liam Stewart, the ice hockey champion, slides into the scene as the brother to Renee. He's got a knack for the sport and has played with some seriously icy teams. Talk about having a cool career!

Alastair Wallace Stewart, the oldest son of Rod and his current wife, Penny, is already working his charm in the modelling world, proving that talent runs in the family.

And last but not least, there's Aiden Patrick Stewart, the youngest bundle of joy. He might be just 12, but he's already got a strong passion for Celtic F.C., just like dear ol' dad.

So there you have it, folks, the epic saga of Rod Stewart and his magnificent offspring. They span decades, genres, and life adventures, making this rockstar family a force to be reckoned with. Keep on rockin' and rollin', Rod and crew!

Images: Instagram

“So elated”: Kathleen Folbigg’s reunion with lifelong friend following pardon

After spending 20 years behind bars Kathleen Folbigg is starting a new chapter as a free woman, and the first person who welcomed her back was her lifelong friend, Tracy Chapman.

Folbigg, 55, who was convicted of killing her three children Patrick, Sarah and Laura and the manslaughter of her firstborn Caleb between 1989 to 1999, was pardoned on Monday and released immediately.

Just hours after she walked out a free woman, Folbigg was reunited with her lifelong friend in a warm embrace on Chapman’s farm in northern NSW.

"I am so elated it's not funny. I am nervous and I am everything," Folbigg told 9News.

With her newfound freedom, Folbigg couldn’t say what would come next.

"I don't know. I need a drink of water. I don't know about anything else," she said.

Chapman, who was an advocate for Folbigg since her conviction 20 years ago, created a “sanctuary” on the farm in case her best friend was pardoned, so she could have somewhere "peaceful, quiet,” to return to where “she's surrounded by animals".

Folbigg has always maintained her innocence, and said that her children all died of natural causes.

Former NSW Chief Justice Tom Bathurst KC, has submitted the new scientific evidence in an inquiry into the death of her babies, and is currently writing up a final report, which could be finished this month.

Images: Nine News

A mother’s love story blossoms from a family reunion 40 years in the making

When Helen Mansfield took to social media in search of her biological mother, she could never have foreseen the good fortune she’d bring about - not only to herself, but to those she held most dear, too.

It was in 2016 that Helen posted to Facebook, hoping to connect with her mother - who had given her up when Helen was only 10 days old.

And a mere five hours later, someone did reach out, informing Helen that her mother was in the United Kingdom, and that her name was Glenda Joy.

Helen, on the other hand, was in Perth, Australia. She’d been adopted by a Welsh couple, but had moved to Perth after marrying an Australian - with whom she shares two daughters.

Four decades of mystery had gone by, but after that stranger on Facebook had set her on the right path, things had quickly fallen into place.

As Helen informed 7News, “straight away, we knew each other. [She] gave me a big hug and said ‘I feel I just won the lottery’.”

It should have marked the end of that happy chapter for Helen and Glen, but Helen’s adoptive dad, Gwyn, had other ideas.

Because when Helen introduced the two - as her biological mother and her adoptive father - they immediately felt a connection, and set out on a number of adventures together, enjoying everything from the cricket to the beach, and last but certainly not least, a kiss.

“I went in to Helen,” Glen recounted, “and I said ‘I’ve got something to say’.

“I said ‘your dad kissed me’.”

Glen added that she hadn’t been expecting it, but that wasn’t a bad thing, as she’d very much “wanted it to happen”.

And it was only good times from there, with the unexpected couple getting married in the United Kingdom after enjoying a commitment ceremony in Perth with Helen as their joyous celebrant.

They have every intention of returning to Australia, too, for a trip packed full of celebration with Gwyn’s 80th and the upcoming birth of a great-grandchild.

But at the end of the day, Helen is “just really happy it happened”, and holds hope in her heart that their story will offer encouragement to anyone else in a similar position, searching for their biological or long-lost families.

“I hope that anybody else - you know, it probably won’t go this far because this is a different story - but anybody else who wants to reach out and find their birth mother,” she added, “should try and do it.”

Images: 7News

Woman reunites with family 50 years after her abduction

DNA testing has confirmed the identity of a Texas woman who was allegedly abducted by her own babysitter when she was 22 months old, and reunited with them after 51 long and painful years apart.

The Fort Worth Police Department announced that they had “completed official DNA testing which confirmed Melissa Highsmith’s identity”, while noting their hope that “this test result will offer additional closure for the Highsmith family”.

While they requested that anyone with more information come forward, the criminal statute of limitations expired 20 years after Melissa’s 18th birthday.

As NBC Dallas-Forth Worth reported, Melissa’s own mother was initially suspected of possibly killing her and then covering up the crime, and the family claimed that a babysitter had been responsible for taking her back in 1971.

Melissa’s disappearance had been one of America’s oldest missing persons cases, according to WFAA.

And while Melissa’s family had spent decades searching for their long lost loved one, it wasn’t until November 2022 that they made their first major breakthrough, when a 23andMe DNA test presented a link between Melissa and her biological parents. It was these same results that the Fort Worth Police Department was seeking to confirm.

"I feel like I am dreaming,” Melissa told WFAA upon reuniting with her parents after their life changing discovery, “and I keep having to pinch myself to make sure I'm awake.”

"I’m just elated, I can't describe my feelings,” Melissa’s mother, Alta Apantenco, added, “I'm so happy to see my daughter that I didn't think I would ever see her again.”

Meanwhile, her father Jeffrie Highsmith admitted that he “cried like a baby”.

Melissa went on to tell her family that she had had a difficult life, even going so far as to run away from home, and that she’d done “what I had to do to get by”.

“I didn’t feel loved as a child,” she said. “It was abusive, and I ran away at 15 years old.”

And the whole time, she’d been living just 20 minutes from her biological family.

That same family who are overjoyed to have their beloved Melissa back with them, and took to social media to update followers, sharing the delightful news that their search was - finally - over.

“The results were exactly what we already knew. She was in fact Melissa Suzanne HIghsmith!” they wrote on their Facebook page. “We now have the OFFICIAL confirmation that she is ours! Our daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, niece. We are thrilled! We are thankful and grateful for all the love and support we have received over the years and especially since we found Melissa.

“Our family is whole and we look forward to the time we will be able to spend as a family of 7!”

Images: Facebook

The real reason for Prince Louis’ special name revealed

When Prince Louis was born in April 2018, the world had to wait a handful of days to find out what name William and Kate had chosen to bestow upon their newborn son.

Eventually, however, the news was broken across the world through a statement from the Royal family - and as typical in the age of social media, through a tweet.

“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son Louis Arthur Charles,” it was announced.

“The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge.”

The name had come as quite the surprise in the betting world, with many having put money on the young prince being called Arthur. But it was ultimately Louis - a name originating from France and Germany that means ‘famous warrior’ or ‘famous in battle’ - that reigned supreme.

As for why the royal couple had not immediately informed the world that he would be Louis, the reason was reportedly quite simple: they just hadn’t had an easy time agreeing.

“They didn’t know if they were having a boy or a girl,” a source said of the delay. “When he arrived they started thinking through things. They were not keeping it to themselves. They were deciding still.”

It was a move that reflected that of William’s own parents, as the late Princess Diana and now-King Charles had differing opinions - she reportedly preferred the likes of Sebastian and Oliver, while he had his hopes pinned on Albert.

Louis is a name that the young royal actually shares with his father - it’s William’s middle name. The latter’s name was chosen by Charles, who was paying tribute to the late Lord Louis Mountbatten.

Mountbatten, as well as being Charles’ friend and mentor, was Queen Victoria’s great-grandson, and was related to both Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

His name was one that had been passed down throughout the family, with his father also named Louis, and even Prince Philip’s grandfather, Prince Louis of Battenberg.

Despite its historical and sentimental significance for the family, it has been said that William and Kate just liked it - a theory further supported by their decision to make Louis one of their eldest son’s middle names, too.

As historian Dr Judith Rowbotham explained at the time, while Louis had been something of a surprising choice, it had also been a safe one, and a tribute as well as “an acknowledgement of a wider heritage.”

The significance of this was not lost on fans of the royal family, who - at the time - were also celebrating the once-in-a-century record that the newborn Louis had broken upon entering the world.

For Louis, at his 8lb 7oz (~3.83kg) weight, had been the heaviest royal baby boy born in 100 years. His brother George had measured in at three ounces less at the time of his birth.

Louis did not, however, secure the title of ‘heaviest royal baby ever’. That bragging right instead belongs to Savannah Phillips, who was 8lb 8oz (~8.86kg) upon her birth in 2010.

Images: Getty

A dating coach’s guide to making a lasting impression with that special someone

Monica Parikh is a lawyer, writer, and dating coach. She started the School of Love in New York City to help men and women develop happier and healthier relationships.

When my ex-husband disappeared, I unexpectedly got divorced at 36 years old. I went back on the dating market--after a 10-year hiatus. Flirting was the best tool in my arsenal (besides an optimistic attitude). Before long, I was meeting men in all sorts of places—the subway, elevators, the gym, and airports.

In my coaching practice, I often see women and men who have forgotten how to flirt. Oh, the pity! Flirting adds spicy intrigue to the mundane. If you’re single, it’s a wonderful way to signal availability and interest. If you’re in a relationship, it helps maintain spark and fuels passion. A little simple flirting says to the world, “I’m alive!”

Flirtation is simply the art of conversation amped up a notch. I’ve always been a good flirt, but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve become a better—mostly because I’ve grown in confidence and self-esteem. A few key tips:

1. Radiate strength

Naked selfies aren’t sexy. Neither is telling your life story on a first date. Real sexiness stems from the ability to tickle the imagination and create intrigue. Less exhibitionism, fewer words, and more confidence fuel desire.

2. Smile

Smile big and often — it lights up your face and says that you’re approachable and warm. It is the green light that gives others confidence to approach you and start conversation.

3. Be playfully combative

When we’re attracted to someone, we often veer toward being overly agreeable and conciliatory. Talk about throwing cold water on a spark! Being challenging, feisty, and a bit unpredictable (while still being nice) is very sexy. My partner and I often playfully spar with words. Intelligent banter makes for a very flirtatious (and fun) relationship.

4. Create an air of mystery

When I was single, a stranger on an elevator once offered to walk me to the subway with his umbrella during a rainstorm. When we arrived, he asked for my number. I demurred, saying that I don’t talk to strangers. (Wink.) He offered his card. I took it but made no promises. He was handsome and charismatic, so I knew he was used to having women chase him.

I waited several days (to build intrigue) and sent him a one-sentence email. He responded immediately, admitting that he checked his email constantly for word from me. Not knowing where the other person stands fuels desire. So, hold your cards close to your chest.

5. Laugh

We’re all a little too serious. Take a ribbing. Give a ribbing. Laugh until your sides ache. Dating and romance are supposed to be fun, after all.

6. Tap into your feminine (or masculine) energy

I have a serious job as a lawyer during the day, so I make deliberate efforts to tap into my softer side after work. I often go home, take a bath and change clothes before a date. I love jewel-colored dresses, red lipstick, and French perfume. This little ritual “washes” the 9-to-5 off me and helps me tap into a different energy/vibration. Each person’s formula is unique, but spend time figuring out the clothing, style, and rituals that bring about the most authentic and empowered you.

7. Ask questions

Conversation with a stranger can be daunting. My advice? Show interest in your beloved’s work, hobbies, family, and interests. Sit back and relax while they open up. You will glean key insights. And I guarantee they will remember you as an amazing conversationalist while they have performed the bulk of the work.

8. Say a person's name — often

My game changed for the better after reading Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People. While technically not a dating book, it’s a wonderful guide on how to be a more engaging person. Carnegie says that someone's name is "to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language.” Pay attention when someone introduces themselves. Repeat their name back immediately. Sprinkle it throughout conversation. Be amazed at the result.

9. Show warmth

Gently touching someone’s hand or back is a wonderful way to show interest. Be respectful of another person’s space. It’s not about draping yourself all over them (or being clingy), which is a big turn-off. It’s about small signals of interest, respectfully scattered here and there.

10. Be original

Successful flirting is about being 100 percent you. Personally, I’m an extroverted nerd who loves the public library, backpacking through Asia, Wes Anderson films, and 1970's soul music. Don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd. Accept that what makes you unique also makes you memorable. That is the most powerful vibrational frequency you can live in — and one that will surely attract an ideal partner.

Images: Getty

The reasons why sibling relationships are so special

The sibling relationship is often a love-hate affair from the get-go – they’re paradoxically our fiercest competitors and closest confidants. In his book, The Sibling Effect, Jeffrey Kluger discusses why sibling relationships are the most important ones in our lives. We’ve picked out Kluger’s most interesting observations about the bond between siblings.

The sibling relationships is unique

“Siblings are the only relatives, and perhaps the only people you’ll ever know, who are with you through the entire arc of your life. Your parents leave you too soon and your kids and spouse come along late, but your siblings know you when you are in your most inchoate form. Assuming you all reach a ripe old age, they'll be with you until the very end, and for that reason, there is an intimacy and a familiarity that can't possibly be available to you in any other relationship throughout your life. Certainly, people can get along without siblings. Single children do, and there are people who have irreparably estranged relationships with their siblings who live full and satisfying lives, but to have siblings and not make the most of that resource is squandering one of the greatest interpersonal resources you'll ever have.”

Siblings teach us important skills for life

“When you learn conflict-resolution skills in the playroom, you then practice them on the playground, and that in turn stays with you. If you have a combative sibling or a physically intimidating, older sibling, you learn a lot about how to deal with situations like that later in life. If you're an older sibling and you have a younger sibling who needs mentoring or is afraid of the dark, you develop nurturing and empathic skills that you wouldn't otherwise have.”

Sibling traits are the same across hundreds of species

“So many of the sibling dynamics we find in the home are replicated in the natural, non-human world, and so much of what I found is universal across several hundreds of species. When you get up to humans, we've embroidered and built on these dynamics in all kinds of elaborate ways, but human sibling relationships are deeply rooted into the evolutionary chain.”

Why sharing is so difficult between siblings

“With very young kids, when researchers look at what the causes of fights are, some 80 per cent of all fights in the playroom break out over property disputes...Parents shouldn't just roll their eyes, even though conflicts over sharing are so common, because property for a small child is a critical way of establishing authority and control over a world in which they have virtually no power.”

Conflict with parents can make sibling relationships stronger

“When your parents, who are the anchors you're counting on the most, are falling down on the job, siblings look to each other and find ways to pull together, because the last thing you can afford to see fractured at that point is the unit among yourselves.”

Images: Getty

“A special girl”: Orphaned crash victim receives bravery award for saving baby brothers

Synthia Rose Day, a five-year-old girl from Western Australia, has received a Children of Courage award for her actions in the devastating crash that orphaned herself and her two younger brothers.

Synthia was in the car with her mother Cyndi Braddock, Cyndi’s partner Jake Day, and her two brothers when their Land Rover left the road in Wheatbelt and flipped a handful of kilometres short of their home. Jake was 28, and Cyndi only 25.

In the backseat with her little brothers, Synthia survived the accident, but the trio were not found for 55 hours in the wake of the tragedy despite a frantic search by both their loved ones and the local authorities.

While the situation the children found themselves in was nothing short of devastating, Synthia stepped up, and took action to make sure her brothers got out of there okay.

"She took the seatbelt off the one-year-old Charles,” the childrens’ uncle, Al Slatter, informed 9News, “[she] got him out of the seat and then got her foot stuck so she couldn't move … and what she did for Bevan was amazing."

The children, freed from the vehicle and watched over by young Synthia, were eventually found on the roadside.

For her actions that day, Synthia has been presented with a Children of Courage award, and was nominated by her teacher, Tony Smeed.

“She's always been a caring and compassionate person,” Smeed said of the decision to put Synthia forward for the award, “and obviously the bravery she showed in 50 hours of heat to keep her brothers alive was just amazing.”

“The award will mean that much to her,” their uncle, Al Slatter added, “and I even had a tear in my eye when they read it out to me, because she’s a special girl.”

Synthia’s beloved brothers - two-year-old Bevan and one-year-old Charles - were in attendance to support their hero big sister, and the family had to travel more than three hours from their home in Kondinin to Perth to attend the ceremony.

Slatter also opened up to 9News about Synthia’s attitude since the tragedy, as the children adjust to their lives in their grandparents’ care, saying, “Charles, she loves him, but Bevan, wherever he goes - if he’s out riding his pushbike out the front - she’s got to be out there checking on him, making sure he’s not too far from Nanny.”

Synthia was one of 38 exceptional children across Western Australia to be recognised for demonstrating resilience, determination, and positivity while living with trauma and various health challenges.

Images: 9News
